Mains BurstingUtilities | Mains Bursting

This technique bursts and displaces the existing corroded/encrusted cast iron main allowing a new pipe to be pulled into its path.

Static Pipe Bursting

When performing pipe bursting using the static method, a cone shaped tool called a bursting head is pulled through the existing pipe to be replaced using steel rods or cable. The bursting head breaks the existing pipe apart and pushes the broken pipe shards into the surrounding soil while simultaneously pulling the new pipe into place behind it. The bursting head is slightly larger than the outside diameter of the new pipe, thereby expanding the soil in the process of pulling. This reduces friction on the new pipe, provides space for maneuvering, and allows for the inclusion of the fragmented pieces of old pipe.

Pneumatic Pipe Bursting

During pneumatic pipe bursting, the pneumatic bursting head is placed in the insertion pit, where a cable is attached to the nose of the bursting head. The cable runs through the existing pipe and is connected to a winch positioned above an existing manhole two section lengths away. The winch applies constant pressure to the bursting head and maintains the direction and angle of the pull while guiding the bursting head through the existing pipe. Meanwhile, the pneumatic bursting head fractures the host pipe using a steady hammering action, which is augmented by the winch force. New pipe is simultaneously pulled into place as the old pipe breaks apart and space is created by the pneumatic head and attached expander.
