TarmacTarmac

European Standards

From Highways to Local Authorities, Housing Developers to Home Owners, Machine Lay or Hand Lay, DTS have the tarmac mix for any application.

There are three main types of ‘tarmac’ surface

  • Hand Lay Asphalt - for driveways and footpaths
  • Machine Laid Asphalt - for larger driveways; forecourts and roads
  • Hot Rolled Asphalt - for an extra wearing course on public roads

Tarmac is usually made up of at least three layers, each laid on top of the other.

Layer 1 - Sub-base

The main load-bearing layer of the roadway, which spreads the load of the weight of traffic. Typically an aggregate layer of Type 1, Type 2 or Crusher Run.

Layer 2 - Base Course

Strengthening layer of the roadway, usually laid 40mm-50mm thick comprising of 20mm or 28mm aggregate in a tar binder

Layer 3 - Wearing Course

Top layer of the roadway/path, consisting of a smaller, harder aggregate usually 6mm or 10mm in a tar binder. Typically this will be in a limestone or hardstone.

Limestone - will wear over time and give a greyish finish to the surface.

Hardstone - will remain darker as the surface wears.
